Sound effects for city ambiance

Tune into the ambiance with our latest SFX pack.

Rookie mistake: Relying on your voice over recording to include all the ambient sounds in your video. If you’ve got a good mic that isolates your voice from the rest of the sound around, whether it’s the traffic or construction of the city, rain in the streets, birds in a garden, the tumbling of the brook, then chances are you’re missing a lot of realism from the scene. When you’ve got a video with a rich visual background present, it can seem unnatural and unnerving if there are no background sounds. That’s why it’s best to have another track for the ambient sounds.

About the sounds

Our new upload includes 500 freshly recorded ambient sounds. On this upload, we’ve focused on providing ambiences and atmospheres that you’d expect in cities, villages, and parks. Nothing here is completely alone in the wild (though we do have those ambiences available on Smartsound Cloud).

The idea of this royalty free sound effects pack was to create a package that contains all the sounds a public space has to offer. With this idea, we went out to record very calm room tones and ambiences with only just a light touch of background elements like humming or rain, heavy construction atmospheres with jackhammers, shopping streets full of talking people, noisy neighbors practicing their instruments, heavy traffic, harbor sounds, and more.

What can you use these sounds for?

A common need for background sounds is for podcasts. If you want the listener to feel like they’re part of the place the narrator is discussing, then the producer adds ambient sounds. Lost treasure in the forest? Add some birds. A crime on the docks? Add some harbor elements.

For video, ambient sounds are great especially when added to a B-roll or anywhere you’re trying to bring the viewer into the scene. With B-rolls, there are often all kinds of uncontrollable sounds in the original filming, but when you introduce your own sounds, you can still bring the roll to life, along with having absolute control over what is said and heard.

Also with outdoor city shots, where the wind might drown out your recordings, or where you’re using isolated mics, it’s always better to use stock atmospheres.
