Make Your Own Music or Use an Audio Library?

There’s no shame in setting your frustration aside. Make your video workflow easier. Here’s how.

You’re a content creator. You’ve started a YouTube channel, mastered the art of video editing, and have developed a pretty good workflow with it. But there’s still something you feel that’s holding you back. Music.

I know how you feel.

I play accordion. I make EDM. When I started my own YouTube channel years back, I thought I had the creative energy to put it all together myself. I thought I could just record myself, do some quick video editing, make my own music, slap it on, and that’d be it, right?

It was not so easy.

By the time I finally got the video editing done, it was already time to post that second video in the week. I was scrambling. And instead of making the original customized music I had planned for my video, I often found myself using my backlog. I’d end up sifting through my tracks I hadn’t sold the rights to that I could publicly use. And of course, once I used that track, it was locked away from further commercial use.

I told myself this was a temporary fix. Once my video editing skills were top notch, I’d have more time to do the music editing. Record, edit, make unique thematic sounds for the transitions, hits, and ambient effects, create upbeat music for the b-rolls. But as I got better at the video editing, I found myself only wanting to learn new techniques there, pushing back the time I had to make that original customized music.

Then I planned to squeeze in another video every week. And I was still not making the music for the channel. Something had to give. Either I had to cut back on the YouTube video plan, or I had to give up on having fresh, customized music.

Using stock music

That’s when the idea of using stock music occurred to me. I shopped around looking at different sites and so some weaknesses. You were pretty much stuck with what they offered. There were no real options in customizability or flexibility.

With a service like Smartsound Cloud, you can make unique and thematic music for your YouTube channel so easily and quickly. In just a few clicks and swipes on a timeline, you can adjust the lengths of tracks and change their mix and mood. You can also choose from several variations. When you do these simple adjustments, you already have what you need. You have that simple bass ambient, that thematic transition sound effect. Cue in the drums and it’s all ready for the b-roll.

Of course, like I said, not all stock music has those advantages. Most you just buy some music with 15-second, 30-second, or 1-minute options. Here though, the sound engineers of Smartsound have done something really awesome. They have taken fully recorded tracks and dissected them in such a way that the program automatically adjusts the intros, outros, and melodies to the exact length you want. And on top of that, you have complete control of the instrumentation.

Making the music your own

Allow me to show you some tracks to illustrate what I mean. First, I’ll show you the full version. This is a track called “Lonely Numbers” from our latest Album, Summer Vibes. Here it is, set to one minute:

Now let’s say you have a part with a lot of dialogue and you just want a touch of underscore in the background. Normally you can cue the soundtrack down a bit, but with Smartsound, you can also remove instruments. Let’s just take out all the music except the pads. And now the same 1:00 of music, with literally one click, now sounds like this:

Perhaps you want to make a b-roll or an extended outro, and want mostly only drums and bass playing, with a touch of guitar. Again, just one click and we have:

We want to mix in some variation. The exact same track can be a bit boring. So here we’ll choose a different “variation” and choose “2nd verse”. With our more modern tracks, this generally just refers to how we’ve changed the arrangement, but occasionally you can get entirely different versions of the song. So, with only one button click we now have:

Finally, you need to work something out that fits for your intro. Jumping to the “2nd chorus” variation, we change the time from 1 minute to 10 seconds, with just a click and a drag. And this is the result:

Make it your own

I think I’ve made it clear here how much simpler life is with Smartsound Cloud. It’s admirable to do it all yourself, but sometimes you don’t have to. You’ve got a great library with massive amounts of easy customization and variation, right at your fingertips. Why not just give it a look for yourself? Try out our app here.
