Sprinkle in the winter stillness with these audio delights.
Winter is almost here, with its frosty descent having started a few weeks ago (except for our Southern hemisphere friends). The mood always opens with Christmas markets and holiday jingles, and heightens with New Years fireworks, until the long and subdued cold silence settles in.
I asked the rest of the staff here at Smartsound Cloud which albums made them think of winter the most. And from that, I composed this list.

These droning ambiences invoke a deeply meditative experience. The vast sonic atmospheres in tracks like “Never Really Here” or “Staring” reflect fields of fallen snow or casual walks in a frosty environment. While “Driving Home” or “Soft Bloom” might emulate the feeling one gets while looking out the window over a hot tea.
The slow cello draws and distant pianos of this album perfectly capture the forlorn moods of the winter cold. Tracks like “Warm Soil”, “Cold Fire” strike up the feeling of a cold nostalgia, while the long cello pulls of “Frozen Skies” or “Somber Mood” definitely fit the slower, more frosty, moments.
Another album full of ambient soundscapes, these focus on a lighter and more uplifting spirit than the previous two. They are in general more rhythmic and less serious, but provide good contexts for underscore. Tracks like “Lovers” or “Soul Suffers” include long, bass drones with higher toned themes, while “Winter Miracle” or “Bees and Combs” offer a gentle push of percussion-based rhythm.
An orchestral album full of lighter and happier moments. Strings and piano make up the majority of the album, along with percussion on a few notes. “Over and Over” contains the excitement of the early winter season, “Yearning” and “Lost in Love” contain all the Valentine’s sentiment you can expect, with the latter overbearingly resembling the Titanic theme, and “Lighthearted” containing the joy of a child’s heart when they see their first snow.
This album is full of soft, reflective ballads and transcendental studies on ambiance. It’s the perfect theme for those melancholic days of cold and clouds. Especially considering how “Winds” and “Cup of Coffee” make you feel like staying outside and staring out the window, or “Soft Silk” has the sound of a winter walk where you come to the realization that you can’t change anything.
