Stones & Wood sound effects

You’re not knocking on wood when using Smartsound Cloud FX

A storm is brewing. Tree branches are knocking against the wood sidings of a lone house in the dark sitting above a bluff. It stands alongside a desolate forest, and a lone figure emerges from the shadows to stand in the distance, facing it. The camera zooms in on their shoes, highlighting the sound of the twigs crunching underneath the soles as the person walks onward, through the forest and towards the house.

The figure stops when a loud crack echoes through the woods. Cut to a shot of a recently fallen branch. Back to the person, who has broken into a run. A closeup of her face shows the fear. Something caused that branch to fall. Something that was not the wind.

She doesn’t waste time to turn back. She gains the stone ground over the cliff, her feet sending small pebbles skidding across the ground and over the edge. The audience hears every movement, highlighting the tension of the moment.

Sound effects are key to making movies and videos realistic, and can add to the mood and tension of any scene just as effectively as camera movements. It’s yet another powerful instrument in the director’s toolbox, and shouldn’t be ignored.

Every two weeks, Smartsound Cloud uploads a new batch of high-quality effects. This one focusing on wood and stone sounds like you would hear in the scene above. We need wood and stone sounds to add to the atmosphere in any outdoors scene, as the two materials are exceedingly common in life.

Smartsound Cloud’s latest upload provides some of the finest wood and stone sounds. Perfect for game designers, podcasters, cartoonists, and people working on serials and movies that just need some good quality effects. We continue to expand our inventory of high-quality, recorded, royalty-free sound effects every two weeks – our subscription service just keeps getting better and better.

About the sounds

In the last upload, we focused on more everyday household sound effects. Our recordists went about their homes trying to figure out what would be the most useful sounds to cover in common projects. They were walking around with their mics in hand and banging on pops and pans, generally disturbing the cat and making their grandmas wonder about how the kids have all gone crazy these days.

Now we’ve sent them to get some sunshine for this latest project. They focused on all kinds of wood and stone sounds, including but not limited to wood slabs dropping, sticks hitting things, sticks scraping things, logs hitting the ground, stones scraping things, stones thrown in the water, gravel movements, and more.

What can you use these sounds for?

These stone and wood sounds can be used in a variety of ways, and are a serious set of basics for film and TV productions, video games, podcasts, and even music. Some examples: For horror films, they can be used to add horror and suspense (for example, the sounds of sticks and stones scraping can give a does of tension). In fantasy video games, they can add a lot of realism to character movements outside, like on a wooden drawbridge or walking through forests, or activity involving a wooden cart.

As for music, wood and stone sounds make for great, organic layers to a mix. And in addition, just about all of these sounds can be taken as is for percussive elements.

The use of stone and wood sound effects are wide-ranging and diverse, and they can be a valuable addition to any creative project that requires a realistic and immersive audio experience. Check them out and use them in your project today!

Stay tuned for the next upload when we’ll be bringing you the sounds of a construction site!
